extravagance

just saw it on the late news. the vehicle number plates MCA 1 & MCA 2 have been successfully tendered for RM300k & RM100K respectively, awarded to a private company in Johor.

it's unbelieveable how much one is prepared to lavish on a few pieces of plastic, attached to the front & back of a depreciating asset. wait, can you call something an asset when its value drops by at least 10%  the moment it leaves the showroom, & guaranteed to plummet thereafter? is it not bizarre that the plates themselves could cost more the vehicles?

there must be innumerable ways this amount of money can be put to better use, esp in this season of goodwill. schoolbags for students, meals for the starving, shelters for the destitute, even life-saving surgeries for the needy.

but i doubt if this trend will end anytime soon, whether conditions are austere or not. willing buyer, willing seller, the economists will say. we have short memories & the recent financial turmoils seemed distant.

on another note, congrats to the malaysian football team for winning the AFF cup. they played well & thoroughly deserved the accolades that will surely be proclaimed in this morning's media.

but another public holiday?

sounds more & more like a season of extravagance.

I think by buying up a number plate for 300K, it is not taxable? perhaps there is a reason to lavish this kind of money on a number plate.. :)
and yes, tomorrow is a public holiday, when I reached the office this morning, everyone was talking about it! well.. this is.. er.. CanLand? :p

Absurd to spend that kind of money of pieces of plastic. The world is mad.

actually am glad msia won. not for the public holiday but it's actually building some faith in national sport. lets just hope the success isnt a one off thing and that people dont put excessive pressure on the team to excel again. we want a nicole david, not a lcw scenario. oh, well, yeah.. i admit, am glad for the public holiday too i guess :P

Loshini,

this young malaysian team will go far if they don't get too big-headed, a disease that seemed to afflict out sportsmen/women, & also as long as the politicians don't interfere.

enjoy your extended weekend break.

Where people get so much money to 'throw'?

Yvonne Foong said...

I toot with the number of surgeries I went through. Kekeke... when combined, worth more than that plate.

Oh! I'll never pay so much for a number plate! In fact, I didn't even bother to get a good number for my car's number plate!

By the way, Happy New Year to you! : )

Ilene,

whether a lot or little money, extravagance like this should be frowned upon.

Yvonne,

with time, could you be worth more than a million?

happy new yr to u. i can imagine being so rich 300k is nothing for being able to stand out in a crowd but while it proves one is able to afford it on the other hand one exposes oneself to public ridicule
