love of my life

my daughter has been asking me to watch the musical wicked with her ever since it started last year. the show will end its run on apr 22, so since i'm free this weekend, i told her to get the tickets. she called while queueing for the tickets :

she : papa, the cheapest tickets are all sold out.

me: how much are the next category of tickets?

she : 95 bucks!

me: ok, go get it

she : it's so expensive! are you sure?

me : it's ok. you're the love of my life.

in a way, i couldn't quite believe i said those words but it's my strong belief, though simplistic, that children brought up in an environment of love, be it propagated by thoughts, words or actions, generally will grow up to give love as well. that said, i must confess that neither of my parents ever said words to that effect to me, although they did show it by their actions of caring for the family. not quite the same, is it?

anyway, i thought 95 bucks is not exactly an arm or a leg, but the time spent doing the same things she likes would eventually prove priceless.

Wow, great dad! my dad would probably do that for my sisters, definitely not me.

Plus, I would ask for stuffs like money to get books or some sort.

i just watched it too! hahahaha! but for me it did cost an arm. though like you said, i think i wouldn't mind getting 2 more ticks for the parents if they wanted to go.

Tempus,

so, did your dad treat you & your sisters equally?

doc said...

Alv,

love should be reciprocal but not always so.

Wenn,

which show were the tickets for?

Small Kucing,

she knows any money saved will eventually go to her education fund.

Birthmark,

i'm too young to have a grown-up godson.

:P

Medie,

it was a good musical, wasn't it? the 2 lead ladies can really sing!

minor drawback was the duration - 3 solid hours!

Some people have difficulty expressing love verbally. I have come to the rather sad realization that I unconsciously learned my mother's trait of expressing love with hostility. But even traits can be unlearned. I am now learning to express love with affection more, gradually.

doc said...

Yvonne,

our parents could unlearn those traits only if they feel compelled to, but that having been ingrained into their personalities for so long, it's an uphill task.

we would do well not to imitate.

Not to incite the vicious cycle. :)

Yvonne,

true.

I remember reading somewhere (yes, I spent hours trolling the trashy london tabloids) that whilst money may not buy happiness, it can buy experiences and precious memories. Twenty, thirty years from now, your kids would probably not remember how much $$ u hv in the bank but they will remember the day the daddy brought them to watch Wicked and what a wonderful memory that was.

Cara,

20 or 30 years from now, they STILL would not know my bank details.

i enjoyed reading british trash as well - the tongue-in-cheek humour that went around then was that the hottest place in the UK is on page 3 of The Sun.

still is, i believe.
