underwear

no, i'm not referring to the scanty lacey types women put on that drive men crazy.

i meant the cotton or polyester types that little boys of school-going age should wear. if they don't put one on, one day in their haste to zip or unzip their pants, a bit of the foreskin may get caught & ouch! it's not a pleasant experience for the boy, his teachers or parents.

just tonite we had such a boy - 7-years old & his "little brother" was caught as he was unzipping his pants to pee. this is worse than getting caught zipping up because he HASN'T peed yet & the pain has made him fearful of peeing. by the time he reached hospital, the discomfort of his distended bladder is causing him more distress than the pain from the zipper. poor kid!

anyway, the zipper was released under general anaethesia & a circumcision was subsequently done to reduce the risk of future "accidents." both his parents have been advised to encourage the boy to put on underwear from now on.

and as far as i know, little girls are spared this little embarrassment.

What's wrong with boys/men har? Never wear underwear and never take up toilet seats! (I know, totally unrelated...but still!)

Iml,

your son's injury must have been a minor one. this boy was really in pain.

doc said...

TZ,

freeballers should wear sports shorts/pants (without zippers).

doc said...

Yvonne,

only for boys/men.

Medie,

imagine a laceration in a very sensitive organ.

MissyC,

a little too harsh on the mum? some kids take time to get used to putting on underwear.

UG,

very painful!

Thank goodness the buy did not have to be castrated! At one time, it was the trend for young guys to wear tight blue jeans without any underwear - I wonder how many got "pinched". LOL!!!

That must have been ouch! Thankfully, he's all right.

Doc, are you a paediatrician? I've always wondered if circumsicion is routinely done in our country. Sorry my general knowledge and awareness about these things are a bit lousy.

ps. British call underwear 'pants'. It is weird because we think of pants as trousers.

Thanks for sharing and say it "loud".
I have those fear when i am faced with 3 "little machine guns" long time ago and i already don them with undies when they were off the diapers...for fear of the "unknown"..and now i truly read one......

doc said...

STP,

castration would have been too drastic!!

i must have missed that "blue jeans" phase!

doc said...

Mei Teng,

the boy was discharged from hospital the next day.

LX,

muslim children have their religious circumcision while in primary school. for the other kids, it's usually done if they develop phimosis or balanitis.

be careful if you are asked if you're wearing pants!!

Patchwork,

your diligence has saved you a hefty hospital bill.

kc said...

he was circ'ed just so he didnt have to wear undies?!

doc said...

KC,

no, he was circ'd to reduce the risk of future zip-related injury, but still can happen if not using underwear.

hahah, i remember going through it as a child, and seeing primary school friends crying after toilet break!!! fun but not-so-fun times lol

cool blog on parenting! will drop by often!

doc said...

KC,

when you wrote remembering going thru it as a child, i thought you actually zipped yourself!

yeah, it's really painful.

kc said...

lol i did! i remember at the departmental store trying on pants as a kids, must have cried LOL.

in any case wud advocate circumcision regardless, think of smegma!

doc said...

KC,

circumcision is shown to have lowered the incidence of penile cancer, as noted in Jews & Muslims.
