it stands for Reality Outside Classrooms. it's part of an enrichment program that the school organises for the secondary students, the objectives of which include providing learning experiences with global perspectives, building team spirit by working with students from different classes & integrating learning across the disciplines and across domains.

i saw it as an expensive a unique overseas study trip.

she's elected to go to cambodia (phnom penh & siem reap) where the students will interact with under-privileged kids at orphanages, carry out community service in villages & learn of the rich & somewhat ugly history of the country. remember the killing fields?

in a way, i am glad. after all those years tagging with us wherever we went, she's finally braved herself to travel with her peers. she's prepared to fly on her own. i wonder if Isaiah had this in mind when he wrote:

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

ROC is a great program. I wish they had this when I was schooling. A dose of reality is good! :)

For we shall walk by faith and not by sight...........

agree wid mei teng, excellent exposure. might help her decide her next step coz many children in school actually have NO IDEA what they want to do when school's over :)

but yep, the killing fields are not something you want to expose your child to, but methinks you worry too much, like all parents. have faith in her :)

Mei Teng,

in my days, the equivalent of ROC would be OBS - outward bound school! i would have benefitted from it if i weren't such a geek!

and it was by faith that i allowed her to go, after much deliberation.

finally, allowed her to go, but yes, as a parent of a teenager who's largely lived a sheltered life till now, i believe my concern for her is justified.

it's time for her to soar on her own wings.

Unicorn Girl,

true, & that's why i finally allowed her to go.

(naturally, she was thrilled!)

it would be a BIG change for her!

Just me,

i don't know about dispossessing nations, but if she remains faithful to the Lord, that's just fine by me.
