a feeding frenzy??

if a public holiday fell over the weekend, & if i'm not on-call, chances are that we'd be in penang. just like the last weekend.

DAY 1
we broke journey at the tapah rest area, & grabbed a dough-nut at dunkin's. we reached penang around lunch time, & had our meal at.....

genting in island glades, with a triple-header of

char kway teow (with BIG prawns)...

hokkien mee (aka prawn mee) &

pasembor (aka indian rojak)....& all these downed with...

..soya bean milk with gula melaka. yummy! (& this is just for ME!)

after leaving our stuff & having a nap at the in-laws, we burned some calories hiking at youth park.

starting point.........

& who the non-starters were......

...a steep climb......

..for a cup of hot chinese tea...

....& a hill-top view of the city. other activities available at the park include ...

an extensive playground with exercise equipment & a swimming pool.

there was a floral fest at the nearby botanical gardens, that resulted in .....

a bumper-to-bumper crawl on the way in & out of youth park.

dinner with the clan on the 1st nite was at a thai restaurant...

Prontip at peel avenue....

kerabu as starters....

tom-yam to spice up the appetite......

unique crab-meat omellete baked in crab shells

kangkong with belacan....

& thai style bean curd.

DAY 2
the next morning, we attended service at ......

the Reservoir Garden Baptist Church at Air Itam,
after which we had lunch at....
(note : we skipped breakfast)....

Kek Seng at Penang Road, famous for its ice kacang with ice cream....

but i had loh bak.....

& dried kway teow instead.
for me, a visit to penang is NEVER complete without ....

a bowl (or two) of penang road chendol.....

where business was brisk.
then, a few minutes at the nearby chowrasta market....

to get some tau sar pneah (aka tambun biscuits) for friends back home.

after that, a brief stop at Borders at Queensbay. there were offers galore but it was the view from the in-store Starbucks that caught my attention...

penang bridge in the distant & .....

pulau jerejak much closer.

it rained in the afternoon, so we couldn't do the hike again (someone heaved a sigh of relief here).

dinner again with the clan, this time at a buffet steamboat...

Today BBQ/Steamboat at Krian Rd (off MacAlister Rd)

a selection of the dishes

& the cooking & grilling.

DAY 3
brunch near Lam Wah Ee hospital...

& then we're on our way home already. & the usual stop-over? sungai buloh overhead rest area.

so, was this a feeding frenzy? a weekend of gluttony? well, it's been said that half of penangites are hawkers & the other half, customers. there could be some truth in that & i may have to start taking cholesterol-lowering medication for future trips to penang.

the other thing is that, we are so very predictable everytime we're in penang. same rest-stop, same hawker stalls, same chendol stall, same hike routine. (if this feels like deja vu, read here) i would certainly be an easy target for a stalker. or a hit-man.

or, maybe i'm just reading too many jeffrey archer's novels.

Penang sounds like really a makan land. I haven't been there for ages.. more than a decade, I am sure.

lynnx,

just 2 words : FOOD PARADISE.

but, if the cholesterol doesn't kill you, the traffic jam will.

great place to hoilday & feast, but i wouldn't want to live/work there, if i have a choice.

Hi, doc,

some 25 years ago, I went there in a tour, I remember eating varieties of food. Then in between, I went there for business. It was always a rush...

I was there last November. A "Datin" brought us to just one eating place that serves "roti" and "soft/half boil egg".

Hey, that's all I saw about Penang!

I was wondering "where have all the food gone"!

Just musing.

As you grow older, you really can't eat much. That's how I feel now!

Keep enjoying.

Doc, can you not publish this comment? I need your help and expertise. Can you be kind enough to help me? (Is yes, thanks!! And you can reply me at lynnxuan@gmail.com)

The thing is, my dad has been told that his ALT (alanine aminotransferase) is too high. Reading is 68, his doc says normal is 51. I don't know much about this liver enzyme. When I google it, I find causes like alcohol (he isn't an avid drinker at all), drugs causing liver damage (he did take celecoxib and some painkillers for the backpain but now reduced), tumours (that's everyone's worst nightmare!!) etc. Do you reckon this is a serious indication?

I am not sure if your specialist but any suggestion or comment is really welcome. Thanks!

man, my mouth was watering when I watch your post. I agree with you. There is nothing to compare with Penang food.

alex,

i have a retired GP friend who flies to penang on weekends with his family, just to feast on the food.

i rest my case.

but the best kway teow thng i know, is still the one operating from a shed at melodies garden, JB. the chap's late father used to push his cart along Jln Ngee Heng to sell in town.

just me said...

Balik kampung and good food always go together!

doc said...

just me,

not only that - they are a happy combination, which never fail to foster closer relationship.

Hey, u and I have it! Penangivitis hahaha. I did all the same routine as you running here n there searching for the same old hawker stalls, cendol, cha keow teow etc etc even to the crawl youth park, floral fest etc. I had a great time in Penang.

But to b honest, after a few days, the euhoria over the food waned just a little. Chee cheong fun is number one for me though :)

same here, doc. whenever i am in penang, i don't eat rice and i don't eat at home. i'll be out 'visiting' my favourite hawkers for the yummy street food. oh yes, 3 days of feeding frenzy and i can't buckle my pants liao.

doc said...

beng,

you were there also last weekend??!! what a coincidence! that crawl at the youth park was a real nuisance, wasn't it? but, ah, the food more than made up for it, right?

doc said...

sbanboy,

looks like there are a lot of trips you have to make.

one at a time, bro!

doc said...

nyonya,

that's why you should hike up the hill for every day that you feast there.

either that, or get expandable pants!

Looking at yr Penang pics makes me long for Penang again. It is interesting that u r from RGBC. I thought u r from KL :) If I had known u were in Penang same time as me I would have tried my best to contact you as I had some trnsport then and the places you hung out are familiar places to me :)

doc said...

beng,

i attend RGBC only when i'm on vacation in penang. we may well have crossed paths sometime during those few days, who knows?

i'm sure we'll meet the next time. sbanboy may want to join in, too!

It's photos like these that make me think whether my wife and I should really come back to Malaysia to practise medicine.:)

doc said...

hi lostsheep,

was that statement academic?

you could still have all that glorious food (& more) from a long vacation, but once you & your wife give up your posts, you might not easily get them back, should you change your mind.

you may have left what we know as Malaysia years ago, but you are coming back to Boleh-land.

think about it!

thanks for your comment.

doc said...

anastasia,

my apologies for this late, late reply.

you can have all these (& much MORE!!) because they are only an hour's flight away.

keep drooling!!

doc said...

yan,

sorry also for this late reply.

25 years is a long time ago. gosh, the bridge wasn't even opened then!

yep, definitely time for a return visit but give yourself at least 2 whole days for food. but do watch out for those daredevils called motor-cyclists!!
