Spell It Right

my daughter's school participated at the state-level competition today & i lent support by being there. this was sponsored by RHB bank & New Straits Times as part of their corporate social responsibility. RHB provided the financial backing, to the tune of RM 2m for the whole competition i was told, while NST organised the event & provided personnel & logistic support.

personally, i did not think that the overall standard of english the students exhibited was good - it was mediocre at best. even the quiz master wavered in the pronunciation of certain words!

as each student was given a different word to spell, a fairer assessment of the students' ability would be to give the same word to each group & allow them to write it down instead. after all, i did overhear some mothers mention,"how come my daughter got the difficult words one?"

anyway, all was not in vain as i learned a few words myself, eg. menhir, elegy & gossamer, none of which, by the way, was spelt correctly.

& as a delayed birthday treat, my daughter had an over-rated, over-priced cup of....

Jonzz,

actually, my daughter had her presents (note:plural) already when we were on vacation in Perth in March. & on her birthday 2 wks ago, we treated her to a dinner at a restaurant of her choice.

the coffee was the last on her (long) list.

Beng,

we all have to start somewhere but it is obvious you have put in serious efforts into your blog - you seemed to be posting everyday now!!

& getting BH to post periodically was a great idea.

keep up the good work!!

Benghui is competing with me to post. He enjoys it and it motivates him to read more and spelling becomes relevant to him. Blogging suits him. But he usually writes on microsoft word n I have to upload the pics for him n get videos. I also check on his grammar but I let a few mistakes slide. I don't want him to feel discouraged. As for pics etc.. he has the right to accept or reject. He takes it seriously thinking people are reading. But actually very few ppl actually read our posts :)

Just me,

thanks. will let you know in due time.

Beng,

i think it's a great idea to let BH learn to blog, & i hope one day to inspire my son to do likewise.

AND, i do read his posts.
