duracell

remember the advert where the toy powered by duracell battery continues to operate & outlasts toys using other brands of battery?

i have a colleague who seems to be powered by alkaline batteries. he'll run his clinic in the morning & work right through mid-afternoon before starting his operating list, which means his day will only be over in the late evening. this is his routine.

of late, he's been operating on non-emergency cases on weekends as well. which means, he's in hospital everyday of the week!

where does he get the energy for such a gruelling schedule, you ask? i don't know. maybe age is on his side. but what i do know is that he is made of flesh & blood, not mechanical parts. at this rate, someday something will give way & new batteries is not going to help.

i just hope he realises this before it's too late for him.

Someone had better caution him! BTW, I thought there's a restriction for doctors working beyond [so many] hours no?

A good advice from a friend like you sure goes a long way. He sure needs help before it's too late....

I see most of them @uni hospital working public/private side & sometimes see them yawning my way esp after 5pm appts.

Lack of doctors? too many patients? or plain workaholic?

Ilene,

he knows.

there's no restriction on working hours for doctors here, but in the UK & most EU nations, there are labour laws that limit the number of working hours for all, not only doctors.

Maybe your colleague has no family?

Zewt,

therein lies the double-edged sword.

if we don't push the limits, there would have been many discoveries, eg. scientific, medical, that we may otherwise have missed.

on the other hand, we have the unfortunate demise of that marathon runner in KL.

LX,

he has wife & 3 school-going kids, so it's baffling why he still spends so much time in hosp.

I know, I know. Inflation! He needs to feed the three kids and a wife! Or sometimes, something that happened in the past may tragic enought to drive us to surpass our limits.

Yvonne,

not really because the wife works as well.

past tragic incident? more like it may happen in the future if he doesn't slow down!
