it served me very well till the affordable compact aim-&-shoot cameras made their debut in the late 80s. after that, i had a olympus digital camera which developed a problem with the shuuter-release button while on vacation. the dealer told me it was cheaper to get a new one than to repair it. i then got a lumix which i still use & i liked it for the 10X zoom. read here.
then i caught the bug - the dSLR bug. so, after months of mulling over the nikon D90, i took the plunge & joined the crowd. but it wasn't the D90 i got.
yeah, it's got zillions of pixels, image-stabilizer & superb image processing but personally, as far as photography is concerned, i have turned a full circle.

I'm still looking at the antique. hahahaha. personally thought either canon or nikon are great cameras. though am not a canon user, 've heard good reviews abt it. but been using nikon ofr a couple of years now. so am pretty contented. looking for upgrades! darn the lenses are so darn expensive. T.T
I got a family hierloom. Dad left behind a Nikon SLR. I think if I sell it to an art museum, might worth a fortune! Used it before, for a college introduction to photography course. You know those baby photos on my blog? Dad captured them using this camera.

btw, dSLRs are cheaper in m'sia. mine would have cost 15% more with the conversion in s'pore.

it's the latest model from canon & is about rm500 cheaper than the D90. that's probably the main reason i got it.

cybershot is a good digicam - slim & classy, but the memory stick is more expensive.
in fact, my daughter wanted me to get the T2 instead of the lumix, but i like the latter's 10X zoom.

after trying it out, i'm beginning to suspect that the camera is only as good as the operator.

yeah, can't go wrong with either a canon or nikon. actually, nikon lenses are generally cheaper than canon's, hence i got the 18-200mm lens so that i don't need to switch.
if you are not too brand conscious, tamron lenses are reasonably affordable & functional.

I toyed with the idea for a long time - whether I shd get a DSLR, or save the money for something else. Your blog post got me thinking again! But how does one learn to pick up the skill and be a better operator? Do you know which is more 'beginners-friendly' - Nikon or Canon?

we are all similar, aren't we? because it's such a major investment, we are cautious about the purchase.
i have a few colleague who are die-hard photography buffs, so i seek their advice but finally, it boils down to trial & error, plus reading magazine for that extra info.
if you're going to upgrade from a compact digicam, then initially both canon & nikon can be intimidating because there are a lot more dials to play around with, so it's down to getting familiar with the camera.
if you're not too fussy about the intricacies of a dSLR, perhaps an entry-level model, eg. D3100, will suffice?

actually it's automatic - the manual part is focussing & rewinding the 35mm film.
it would have fetched a good price if i hadn't let my son play it like a toy when he was young!!
