falling like flies.....

last week, Dr T, whom I remember fondly as a lecturer in med school & who had kindly excised a lump on my forearm when I was a student, passed on after a prolong illness that was refractory to even the strongest antibiotics.....

this week, Dr B ingested weed killer & succumbed to its effects.....

this morning, my colleague Dr K suddenly passed on from a longstanding tumour....

people say doctors play God with the lives of others but i'd like to reassure everyone that nobody, least of all medics, can ever defy the laws of nature. with medical advances, we can stave off severe infections, bouts of depression or cancers but for a brief moment, in a feeble attempt to prolong our stay on earth but it's a matter of time before we meet the Creator.

As a doctor with access to many different types of drugs, isn't there a better way to commit suicide than to ingest weed killer?

dear anonymous,

when one is desperate, I suppose the nearest available way out is chosen but yes, taking weed-killer is a painful way to go..

the other commonly available drug that cause much misery before death is panadol.

however, I can't reveal here what would be painless!!

Perhaps sometimes knowing too much is a bad thing :(

Thanks for your reply doctor. I guess it is important to remember not to commit suicide when one is desperate as one is really not in the right frame of mind at the moment. A painless suicide I believe would be opiate overdose but then for us non-doctors, it would be near impossible to get our hands on that amount of opiate to do the job.

Andrea,

knowing too much is fine, as long as you know where your limits lie, that shd be ok.

Anonymous,

suicide, like most other desperate measures, are mostly rash decisions made without much fore-thought.

we've all made silly decisions before, so we shd know better that to repeat our mistakes.

but then, we're only human.
