If you wanna party at night... Legian + Kuta will be the place to look at. HardRock Hotel is a nice place to stay. :)

I remember visiting Tanah Lot. A long drive away but beautiful. Temple by the sea. Be there at sunset.
Kuta is the usual tourist trap like Patong in phuket.
There is also a monkey forest (cant remember what it is called) but the monkeys can be quite fierce, expecting and snatching food from tourists. All part of the day tour to tanah lot.

I remember staying at the club med there which is like all club meds. I also stayed at the 4 seasons BUT that is just too expensive nowadays. Generally the hotels at Jimbaran Bay have excellent long stretches of beaches for surfing, body boarding.

I stayed at Mercure Kuta Hotel next to HardRock, nice & convenient to walk to town. Both these hotels frontage is the beach area, in the evening you will see locals in buses milling around waiting for sunset. Ubud is the place for arts/crafts. Nusa Dua is for romancing on the beach :D Since bomb blast, everywhere hotel security is consider tight, u walk in out 7x still get checked:)

Get good rates for hotel online or AirAsia deals, to get around best to use local guide.

I wanna go there again..

Hi doc, having stayed in Bali before, very hard to look at the place from a tourist point of view. But I have joined a few guided tours where we were brought to all the usual spots, personally I don't like popular places like Goa Gajah or Tampak Siring which are basically worship sites. Most people I know enjoy Ubud and Bedugul. I would recommend a biking tour, I think there are many routes to choose from, most of my friends enjoyed that. For souvenirs, Krisna at Sunset Road is recommended as it is cheaper than Sukawati and definitely Kuta and of better quality too - the best part is no need to bargain :) If you are into spa, must try. There is also a "Water Bom" in Kuta, maybe your boy may like that - my Indonesian friends bring their children there but I have never been. Hope it helps.
