another milestone

we remembered fondly when the boy achieved his developmental milestones, like..

crawling on the bed....

eating
on his own....

& today, he's excited that he's able to cycle unaided....

on his modified bicycle (after removing the 2 side-wheels). it's uncanny how kids pick up skills like cycling without being taught. one day, he needed all 4 wheels to keep balance & the next....voila!

now, if only he could write better....

but then again, i may be asking for too much.

sometime i kind of pity with those kids whose parents are putting lots of pressure on them...

Fortunately, my parents did not pressure me on any of my studies or things that i learnt.. I learnt Piano when i was very young, How to sustained my interest? mom learnt Piano together with me and dad bought me lots of classical music like Mozart, Beethoven etc to boast up my interest of learning and appreciate music... They used the same method for my art classes... :-p

I learnt stuff without pressure and i enjoyed the learning process so much... :-)

For such a young child (4?), i think the writing is considered quite good.
I still cant get my kids to cycle on the 2 wheeler, even when I am holding the back for them. Congrats to yours!!

LOL @ iml.

And not all kids learn to cycle on their own, only the brilliant ones do, or the ones who get a lot of support and positive motivation from their parents. =)
My parents were exasperated at my being unable to learn to ride with two wheel that they gave up. I was a cry-baby, not very easy to tolerate. ;)

And you may be glad to know that the boy's chinese is better than mine. I know not a single word in that picture!

Hehe.

God bless.

tz,

it's true how much pressure parents exert on their kids these days, but i must admit even in my time, my father did the same to me, esp. during primary school. after that, studying hard & trying to well in school just became 2nd nature.

speaking just for myself, i'm grateful my father pushed me hard, & i was able to accept the challenge. maybe that's why i also ...er...strongly encourage my kids to study hard as well.

SAHM,

thanks.

the boy will be 6 next mth. i've more or less accepted that his handwriting will not be very neat because he's left-handed.

the other "skill" he picked up on his own is whistling, & none of us at home whistles.

iml,

in the making? i suspect the process will not be completed as he's extremely playful. actually, he prefers doing things with his hands to reading/writing.

anastasia,

it's uncanny you mentioned "picture", because when i saw the boy's handwriting, i really thought he was drawing rather than writing, much like the early chinese writing of the shang dynasty. at the moment, his written chinese is better than everyone else at home.

thank you for your kind compliments.

God bless.

I also want to say that your boy is displaying doctor's writing!

My daughter is left-handed ( doesn't take after her parents)but has excellent handwriting

doc said...

just me,

so you agree that his handwriting is a bit illegible?

everyone else i know who's left-handed has untidy writing, that's how i made that conclusion.

i stand corrected.

My parents have never pressured me whenever it comes to my studies however they do give me advices every now and then. I do deliver what parents want to see when it comes to academia though ... Same thing w/my siblings. Anyway, I don't think applying so much pressure on kid is good b/c it might end up stressing them only. But perhaps my entire thought will change when I have my own.

(:

I am right-handed but my handwriting is a doctor's handwriting!

kyels,

you made a relevant point there. we can comment (& mean well) but sometimes act differently when we are in that similar position.

in a way, my father pressured me & that thought has stuck with me all these years.

just me,

practice makes perfect, but for some people, it's a lost cause!!

My daughter is right-handed, but she just does not write well. When I thought I am settled with handwriting like that for all of us, me, my husband and daughter, my son pleasantly surprised us with good handwriting!

Your son must be writing the circle the other way, that is clockwise! That's interesting. It shows so much character! By the way, I draw the cycle that way. So does my daughter. I am dyslexic. My daughter is also one. Having said that, I have no implication whatsoever that your son may be one :)

doc said...

yan,

you've made an interesting point. i've been suspecting for some time now that the boy may also be dyslexic. sometimes he has difficulty recognising & reading out simple words, although i often attributed that to the fact that he didn't attend Smart Reader claases.

he is smart to b able to cycle without wheels. as for me i havent given him a chanz to learn bcoz i am afraid to give him the freedom...traffic being the way it is. however there being a family emergency, i realize how we have pampered him too much n he is unable to cope with the reality of life. but God has been kind. Praise God

beng,

the boy is only allowed to cycle within compound of the house & the nearby playground, & he is always accompanied by one of us.

i know God will see you & your family through the valley of the shadow of death, & goodness & mercy will be showered upon you all the days of your lives.

amen.
