isn't it wonderful to come home after a hard day's work, then put the feet up & have an ice-cream cone served from a loving heart.

LOL. My best ice-cream in the world is served in the ICU of St. Vincent Medical Center. They are so cool! They really have these ice cream in cups in the ICU for patients after we wake up from surgery and the internist say we can eat. That's the best ice cream in the world. The first food to reach out tummy after surgery is ice-cream at SVMC!

1st time i've heard about this; often the 1st oral intake post-operatively is a warm drink.

it will happen when you least expect it, like how it was with me.
one afternoon last week, when i got back, as i slumped on the sofa, the boy asked if i wanted ice cream. when i asked what he has, he replied either a "potong" or cone. when i opted for the cone, that's when the world's best ice cream happened for me!
Makes me wanna stock up on some ice cream at home haha.
Doc, water is too liquid. We might choke on water. So they feed us ice-cream first. Less liquid.
Maybe it's the fact that HEI treats many patients with mild to moderate to severe dysphagia. I also have some swallowing difficulty due to a paralyzed left vocal cord and left pallate. But even before they were paralyzed, I was already served with ice-cream in the ICU first thing after surgery.
We start taking jello, ice-cream and ice chips. When the nurse observes and feels we can swallow, she will inform the internist who will then allow solid food and water to be served.
So this is their level of precaution. It also minimizes the chances of post-operative complications happening. I can often eat complete meals while still in the ICU. But even during those times, they make sure I start to take ice-cream, jello and ice chips first before they feed me solid food and water.

it does make sense now that you mentioned it. ice-cream can either be semi-solid or liquid, depending on which stage they are ingested.
some patients with swallowing difficulty may benefit from thickened fluids.
They have thickeners too. One time, a nurse in the ward put thickener in everything when she was helping me to my food. In the soup, milk and coffee! Yuck!

it's probably palatable with soup, but milk & coffee??
Maybe that nurse was overly concerned. Maybe this was after the December 2009 surgery where I stayed for five days in the ICU. Maybe that's why she was more careful than usual. *shrug*
