comedy of errors

there are 5 of us in the same department. when pay day arrives, one of my colleagues will collect the cheques & distribute them to the others. but recently, i deposited the wrong cheque & didn't even realised it till much later.

this is how it happened.....

my colleague who collected the cheques passed to me someone else's envelope & then passed mine to the other person. the 3 of us didn't even notice the error because the names on the envelopes are similar.

the 2 of us who received the cheques wrote the our names & account numbers at the back of the wrong cheques without checking.

and, we both deposited the cheques at the banks' machines, again without checking.

having to retrieve the cheques from the bank after several days' lapse meant we'll both get our pay late.

let's hope we don't treat our patients the way we handle cheques!!

incidentally, this reminds me of several Air Crash Investigation episodes on tv. it's almost a ritual - the plane company cuts cost, the maintenance guy changes a wrong-fitting part, the supervisor overlooks, the plane is in the air when the pilot realises something is wrong & soon the plane disappears from the radar screen.

except that this comedy of errors is not so funny.

Do they not practise GIRO payments over there? Almost every company, and govt dept in Singapore does that - your money/salary gets credited into your bank account directly. No more manual cheque writing.

Luckily the cheque did not bounce or you will be charged.

SAHM,

the hosp directly bank in the pay of the salaried staff, but for doctors, although this option was offered, most of us prefer to see the "real thing" & "feel the cheque."

;)

Yvonne,

the cheque will bounce only if there are inadequate funds in the payor's account to honour the said cheque. otherwise, it will just be returned.

Medie,

have to wait a few days to get the cheque back, then change with my colleague, then bank in the right one.

As for me - if I get my salary by cheque, I don't think I will miss the error. It's my long hours at work 6 - 7 days a week translated into the cheque!

Kitty,

i also hope no one else makes the same mistake.

I hope hospital attendants won't wheel in the wrong patient into OT and cut up the wrong thing! whahaha...

Ilene,

even when the correct patient is in OT, the wrong side has been operated upon.
