turning 18

i used to think that when you're 21, you've finally achieved liberty. because on your 21st birthday, you usually get a key-shaped present, be it a pendant, a plaque or even a cake. the key symbolises freedom, but from what, i don't really know. not financial freedom, that's for sure, since most people at 21 still depend on their parents for living & education expenses.

now, i think youths achieve an independence of sorts when they turn 18. they can sign consent forms for medical procedures, they are entitled to supplementary credit cards & can operate a bank account on their own.

however, some see this rite of passage differently. i asked my daughter how she felt about turning 18 today. she said now she can consume alcohol & go clubbing.

i chuckled, though i'm not really sure if she was serious about going reckless. remember, she recently ran thru a red light on her driving test?

still, she is who she is, & i love her to bits! blessed birthday, darling daughter!

owh sweet 18~ I remembered when I was 18. Miserable life. Worsen till I finally know what I am going to do in my life.

Clubbing and alcohol? please, people do that way before they hit 18 in our school. 21's the real age I would say, when you can vote.

I like her already. Long live alcohol! Lmao

SAHM,

thanks for your kind wishes.

this is one event she definitely want our blessings, so no chance of going reckless.

Tempus,

clubbing at 18 must be common in the city. somehow, don't you think the generation, be it X or Y, is generally more interested in getting supplementary cards than voting?

Medie,

i'll tell her she has a new fan.

Going clubbing and drinking alcohol is the in=thing among youths now. Chances are, she might be tired of clubbing and drinking by the age of 21 and go back to her original self. ;)

Yvonne,

i hope she doesn't start.

But if she doesn't try, she will always have the 'what if' feeling and will always be tempted to try.

true that! but I guess im a different gen Y. I kinda hate clubs, cause of smoke, sweat and alcohol, I dont really wanna get any extra cards, I mean seriously? You ain't even earning to feed yourself yet, let alone afford those bills. ATM shall do the trick for now.

I guess I'm gen A XD

Yvonne,

i meant clubbing; alcohol is fine if consumed in moderation.

there are many things i haven't tried, eg. drugs, & i've never wondered what if. there are just things one never should try & i hope to impressed upon her where the boundaries lie.

Tempus,

a credit card is suitable for those who have a good sense of financial management & restraint, not just to show off. there must be many people who are up to their noses in credit card debts.

Happy birthday to your "little girl". When I turned 18, I didn't really know what I wanted. Not that I know better either, now that I am *cough* 26 *cough*.

For me, it was entry into the casino! :)

Fibrate,

unfortunately, at that age, you've only got enough for a few rounds at the one-arm bandits.
